Is it safe to visit Romania?
According to several rating systems, Romania is a generally safe country. On the Global Terrorist Database, which tracks terrorist activity, our country ranks on position 138/163, which certifies that no terrorist attacks have occurred here. Meanwhile, Romania places 22/163 countries on the GPI (Global Peace Index), which is based on militarization, society and security or domestic and interest conflict.
Crime rate in Romania in at a low level. In fact, it’s below the European average. Still, it doesn’t hurt paying attention at your surroundings. On the other hand, high corruption is still a serious problem. If you find yourself in a situation where authorities propose a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution which doesn’t seem right to you, the best approach is to refuse such a solution and seek legal justification.
Need to Know before traveling to Romania
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re traveling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Transylvania Vacation Packages – Driving
On our itineraries, we provide transfers between the included attractions. Depending on the number of travelers, we can arrange transportation in a car, minibus or a coach. While driving outside cities, you will encounter several areas where infrastructure is in a bad state and traffic is slow and crowded, especially if the National Road crosses through a village. Because we only have a few highways which only cover a small part of your itinerary, there is a high chance you will encounter heavy traffic and experience an extended driving time.
If you decide to extend your stay and visit attractions outside the itinerary on your own, you might need to drive yourself around. If you need to reach multiple locations, you should rent a car and drive yourself around. Otherwise, you will end up paying a lot of money on bus tickets and taxi fares. Inside cities, look out for drivers who tend to break the law (crossing red lights, risky overtakes or just aggressive behavior are common). Expect crowded roads, especially during rush hours and make sure you plan ahead and find a place to leave your car. Take into account that finding a parking spot near your destination can prove to be quite the challenge.
Pickpocketing
Muggings are not a common occurence in Romania and, since carrying weapons on the street is forbidden, you won’t have to worry about being robbed. However, this doesn’t mean that someone can’t attempt to steal your belongings. Pickpockets are usually found in buses or on the subway train, where the large crowd offers them the opportunity to steal your valuables and disappear before you even notice. They usually operate by cutting your bag open, so the best advice we can give you is to always keep your baggage within eyesight.
Another precaution you should take is to leave your most valuable items in the hotel safe whenever possible. When leaving the hotel to visit the attractions included in your tour, bring only the items you really need.
Do not accept any kinds of offers to exchange money in the street. These people are scammers and you will end up losing money. Instead, discover the banks and exchange houses nearby with a quick internet search and only change currencies there. Between these, we recommend choosing an exchange house because they offer better rates.
Laws
According to the Romanian laws, you should always carry photo ID. Keep your passport and/or ID Card in a safe place and only carry photocopies with you.
In Romania, you are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations.
Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail.
Travel Insurance
One of the most important things you should do before traveling anywhere is to get travel insurance. If you neglect this and something unexpected happens on your journey, you will most likely suffer financially. Furthermore, travel insurance covers healthcare costs, which is a plus because your health plan does not apply in foreign countries and medical services tend to be quite expensive.
How much does a trip cost?
One of the main concerns when it comes to booking a holiday is the price. Even if you are not concerned about how much you will have to pay, you need to research the costs in order to plan your budget. Our tours cover transfers, accommodation, meals, attractions and special events. If you plan on extending your stay, though, you will need to know – for instance how much public transportation costs.
The price of your tour can differ based on your options. For some locations, we offer the possibility of choosing between 3* and 5* accommodation. Itineraries have different prices based on their length and the attractions and special events included. Tailor made experiences cost more because we organize our itinerary for you and your group only. Furthermore, you can choose your own departure date so you can travel whenever your schedule allows you to.
On average, a 7-Days Tour in Romania costs about €1200. Meanwhile, for a 3-days short break, you will pay around €600 – €700. These costs are designed for people sharing double rooms. If you require a single room for yourself only, you will also have to pay the ‘Single Supplement’ fee. Its value depends on the number of nights included in the tour. Check out each tour page to discover the exact prices.
Transylvania Vacation Packages – Prices for Study Trips
Our Study Trips are designed for large groups of students accompanied by a tour leader – usually a teacher – who travels free of charge. For the rest of the group, the prices are, depending on itinerary:
- ‘Transylvania’s Undying Legend’ Study Trip: €1287 or €1576 for single rooms
- ‘Dracula Tours for Schools’: €1557 or €1837 for single rooms

Prices for 3-Days Transylvania Vacation Packages
Throughout the year, we organize a 3-Days Vampire Tour including the most important Transylvanian highlights and our Ritual of Killing of The Living Dead. You can book this itinerary for €569 or €666 for single rooms.
On Halloween, our 3-Days itinerary departs from Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest and includes both our party in Sighisoara Citadel and the popular Halloween Party at Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle. Book your tour now for €599 or €666 for single travelers.
1 and 2-Days Halloween Tours
If you are only interested in attending a fun Halloween Party, we recommend booking a 1 or 2-days itinerary.
1-Day City Breaks include accommodation, one dinner, one breakfast and access to either our fun Halloween Party in Sighisoara Citadel (€249) or the popular Halloween Party at Dracula’s Castle (€258 / 288 for single rooms).
The difference between 1 and 2-days tours is that the later also include transfers. The itinerary including our Halloween Party in Sighisoara departs from Sibiu, Cluj, Brasov or Bucharest and it costs €439 or €479 for single rooms. The same itinerary focusing on the popular Halloween Party at Bran Castle departs from Bucharest and can be booked for €369 or €399 for single travelers.
Prices for meals in Transylvania
Our tours are designed to include meals and transfer between attractions. We usually include a breakfast and a dinner every day and we drive you with either a car, a microbus or a coach depending on the number of travelers.
Regardless of this, you should know what are the average costs of food and how much you’d have to pay for public transportation or taxis in our country. Budget Your Trip is a website dedicated to helping you plan a budget depending on the country you are traveling to. According to them, travelers spend – on average – 104 lei/day on food in Romania. This sum covers three daily meals but, if you are only here for our tour, your breakfast and dinner are included in the price of the itinerary and you only need to pay for lunch on your own account if you wish to.
While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Transfer Costs
While you don’t have to worry about using public transportation during our tours, you might want to wander off on your own during a window in one of the cities we stop in (always make sure you get back to the hotel in time, otherwise our guide will have to wait for you and the schedule will be delayed). Or you might want to extend your stay and visit attractions not included in our itinerary. In either case, we have some advice which will help you make the best traveling decisions.
Public Transport or Taxis?
- If you want to visit multiple attractions, public transportation (and especially taxis) can get quite expensive. In this case, your best option might be to rent a car (just remember that parking spots are hard to find in big cities).
- Buses are the cheapest means of transport, but there are a few disadvantages: you have to wait in bus stations and the bus itself is very crowded most of the time (same applies to the subway). Furthermore, large crowds provide perfect opportunities for pickpockets. If you choose to travel by bus or subway, always keep your belongings within eyesight.
- Taxis are safer than buses and you get to travel in more private environment. Still, there are some things you should be aware of. First of all, some drivers will try to take advantage of you being foreign. They will drive you in circles in order to increase the sum on the meter. There are also taxi drivers who attempt to negotiate the cost of the ride upfront. Avoid these drivers and refuse any offer of this kind. The price they require is usually a lot higher than what the ride is actually worth. You can easily avoid these problems by using a ridesharing app such as Uber. This way, the app tells you how much you need to pay before you even get inside the car and the driver has no control over this sum.
Budget Your Trip reveals that travelers spend around 79 lei / person on local transportation every day. If you choose the bus or the subway, you will pay significantly less than that.
