Budget Your Trip

Transfer costs

Our itineraries include transfers between the included attractions. If you don’t intend to extend your stay and explore more of our country on your own, this section might not be interesting to you. Otherwise, here is some advice regarding the best means of transport available.

First and foremost, consider the number of places you intend to visit. Buses or taxis might not be the most convenient solutions in case you intend to visit multiple attractions. If you want to avoid waiting a long time in stations or spending a lot of money on taxis, you should rent a car.

If you choose to travel by bus, tram or subway, you should know that these means of transport are usually very crowded and you might encounter pickpockets. In order to discourage potential thieves, you should always keep your belongings within eyesight.

A taxi is safer than a bus, but you might still encounter drivers who will attempt to take advantage of the fact that you are foreign and you don’t know the city. If you feel like the driver is circling around in order to increase the sum on the meter, check your route on a GPS application and make sure you are on the right track. Furthermore, some taxi drivers attempt to negotiate the cost of the ride in advance and ask to keep the meter off. Do not accept such an offer as it is usually a lot higher than what the ride is worth.

Is it safe to visit Romania?

Bran Castle seen in Vampire in Transylvania Dracula tour and Best of Romania tours

Romania is a safe country for tourists. This is certified by the fact that no terrorist attacks have occured here and that the crime rate in our country is lower than the European average. These claims are backed by several indexes:

  • The Global Terrorist Database ranks us on position 138/163, which means that there is very low or no terrorist activity at all in our country
  • The Global Peace Index, which considers factors such as militarization, society and security or domestic and interest conflict ranks us on position 22/163 countries

While we have a low crime rate in Romania, we are still dealing with a lot of corruption. You might encounter situations where authorities offer a ‘mutually beneficial solution’ to a problem. These kind of solutions are, most of the time, illegal. You should refuse and seek legal justification to avoid any trouble in the long run.

Need to Know before traveling to Romania

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re traveling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving

Our escorted tours provide transfers between the included attractions. We can provide a car, a minibus or a coach depending on the size of your group. If you decide to extend your stay in Transylvania, you might need to drive yourself around.

If you drive inside cities, pay attention at your surroundings. Some drivers will break the law (or at least attempt to) and cross red lights or perform risky overtakes or illegal u-turns. You will most likely encounter heavy traffic especially during rush hours. Parking spots might be difficult to find. We recommend looking up the parking lot which is closest to your destination and leave your car here as a last resort.

Outside cities, you will drive mostly on National Roads. You will notice that your route passes through several villages, where you have to slow down and pay attention as you might encounter carts and animals on the road.

Pickpocketing

You don’t need to worry about being mugged in our country because this almost never happens. However, you many encounter pickpockets. They operate mostly in crowded places such as buses or the subway. Pickpockets take advantage of the large crowds; they cut your bag or purse open and sneak away with your belongings.

How can you avoid pickpockets? Well, the best advice we can offer is to keep your bag within eyesight the whole time since this usually discourages potential thieves. If you have this possibility, leave your most valuable items in the hotel safe. We always suggest carrying only essentials with you when visiting attractions.

If you need to exchange currency, your best option is an exchange house. They offer good rates, often better than banks, which should be your second option. Avoid people who offer to exchange money on the street. They are scammers and you will end up losing money if you fall for their tricks.

Laws

According to the Romanian laws, you should always carry photo ID. Keep your passport and/or ID Card in a safe place and only carry photocopies with you.

In Romania, you are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations.

Penalties for drug offenses are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail.

Travel Insurance

Before leaving your country, make sure you have a good travel insurance. This way, you will not suffer financially if something unexpected occurs while you are abroad. For instance, you might require medical services. Your healthcare plan most likely doesn’t cover free care or subsidized costs in our country, but if you have a good travel insurance, your insurer will take care of the costs.
